The decision of whether or not to hire an attorney for your personal injury claim can be a daunting one.  Many people do not want to pay the fee for an attorney; which is usually about 30% of the award.  While this is a legitimate concern, there are other important factors which should be taken into account.
Many personal injury cases are more complex than they seem.  An experienced attorney is well-equipped to assist you in navigating the complicated legal system.  The attorney will be familiar with the filing deadlines and requirements of your jurisdiction as well as the pleading, settlement, and trial procedures.
An attorney is also better able to determine your rights and the amount of compensation you truly deserve.  This is especially true for complex or serious injuries which may lead to pain and suffering, lost wages, disability, necessary long term care, loss of enjoyment of life, and many other complications which can arise before, during, or even after the case has been initiated.
An attorney will also represent your interests and strengthen your position when dealing with an insurance company.  Insurance companies are notorious for offering claimants settlement amounts far below what they are actually entitled to.  An attorney will be able to assess the suitability of the insurance company’s offer.  He or she will also provide a strong representative to negotiate with the insurance company on your behalf.
Finally, hiring an attorney provides you with someone who can deal with the case for you.  It removes the pressure and stress of trying to deal with the litigation while you are recovering and managing the rest of your life.
